Marathon Couples Therapy is a dynamic and effective alternative to traditional weekly sessions in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. It is a condensed and focussed approach to couples therapy that will provide you with the time you need to address specific issues and get your relationship back on track in a short but intense period of time.
Marathon Couples Therapy consists of 2 days in which you and your partner engage in intensive marital therapy for 6 – 7 hours per day broken down into 4 x 90 – 120 minute sessions. These days can be either consecutive, or as close together as our schedules will permit.
Marathon Therapy can be very effective for couples because it enables both of you to feel heard and understood in a safe environment and get to the heart of the problems you are experiencing a lot more quickly than if we are meeting week to week. As the two of you are my sole focus for the two full days it also creates a better sense of “flow” to the experience than weekly meetings. Marathon Therapy can be especially useful when you want to engage in Gottman Method Couples Therapy but live in an area without access to therapists trained in this method or if you or your partner are a FIFO worker or have work commitments that make weekly therapy appointments difficult to attend.
During your marathon, I will help you both to build skills that will:
Prior to your marathon I will email you and your partner a number of questionnaires for each of you to complete. These questionnaires help me understand both of your individual histories and the history of your relationship as well as some of the main issues that have developed over time and bring you to couples therapy now. This information will significantly improve the service I am able to give you and the more detail you include in these questionnaires the better understanding I will have which will enable me to help you more effectively. As part of this process you will also receive the complete Gottman Relationship Checkup – an online relationship assessment package developed by the Gottman Institute.
Following your marathon I may recommend a few appointments either in person or via secure web conferencing to help you consolidate what you have learnt and be able to implement the skills gained through your marathon to new situations that may arise. Couples who have engaged in this process in the past have reported that they were able to process a range of unresolved issues and are surprised with how much change was possible in a short space of time. They expressed a sense of relief at feeling like I “had their backs” while they processed difficult issues. The aim of Gottman Method Couples Therapy is ultimately to equip the couple with the skills and understanding they need to be able to continue to nurture their relationship and deal with new challenges and conflicts in a way that enables both members of the couple to feel heard, respected and understood and to be able to make effective repairs when required.
Once you have made a decision to engage in marathon therapy it is important that you both try really hard to hit the pause button on any ongoing issues and tensions in the relationship knowing that you have taken an important step in creating a different kind of relationship. Booking in for Marathon Therapy is a gesture of faith and commitment to explore new growth in your relationship. You will each have ample time over the two days we spend together to address the issues you are struggling with in a way that will leave each of you feeling more heard, understood and validated. So whilst you are waiting to begin your Marathon rather than continuing to thrash over your issues, I recommend you focus instead on what kind of relationship you would most long to have once these recurring issues have been processed in a deeper way and are no longer center stage of your relationship.
$3000 inclusive of a deposit of $400 payable at the time of booking to reserve your marathon. This fee is refundable up to two weeks before your marathon less any costs already incurred.
